Flaxseed recipes and health benefits of flaxseed

Flaxseed

The flax and flaxseed are originally from central Asia. It is a one-year-old plant with pure leaf, high from 50 to 100cm. It has a lovely, small blossom of blue. Mostly grown in Russia, India, South America, U.S., Canada.  In the nineteenth century, Russia becomes the largest producer in the world (even 80% of the world’s production), and it holds this place today.

Flaxseed is dark brown, very glossy, smooth, egg-shaped, flattened. The husk is thin, and the bark coated with a slime in which it has mucus. Which makes water, tea, soups, sour milk, softeners and seeds mucus (100 kg of flax seeds can give 5 to 10 kilograms of dry mucus). Phlegm is the primary carrier of the medicinal properties of flax. Only the core of flax is creamy color, no starch, but it has oils.

The unprocessed flaxseed has about 2500 mg of essential fatty acids, namely linoleic and alpha-linolenic acid. In the flaxseed, it has about 25-30% protein, which makes this seed very nutritious. Flaxseed is an excellent source of phosphorus, iron, niacin.

Flax mucus works well on the inflamed mucous membrane of the stomach and gut. Flax mucus is a mild and harmless cleansing agent, and it is a gentle and safe cleansing agent. So, it has a laxative effect, because it works beneficially against constipation by mechanically activating the movement of the lazy intestine.

Constipation is the most common digestive organ disorder. This problem is not a rarity even for future moms. Flax can use as a painless and harmless, lactic tool, even children, pregnant women, and breastfeeding.

Mucus obtained in such a way that 10g of flaxseed is immersed in 100g of lukewarm water and thus holds about 6 hours, sometimes stirs it. Flax mucus is not good taste, which is why some people cannot tolerate it. Addition of aromatic herbs (mint, basil, anise, the chamber of) pleasant smell, and the taste is not bland.

It works favorably on heart disease, arthritis, in the treatment of elevated LDL (bad) cholesterol, in Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, depression, asthma, painful menstrual cycle.

With lignin-rich foods defensive work against endometrium tumors — the flaxseeds among the most abundant source of the lignin. But the substantial quantities of this active herbal substance with antioxidant properties can be found in pumpkin, asparagus, carrots, and broccoli. Women who consume lignin-rich foods have significantly reduced the risk of this type of tumor, according to US scientists at the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. Risk reduction is most pronounced in postmenopausal and obese women.

Flax prevents the creation of clots in the blood, reduces cholesterol, and is useful in case of hair loss.

The flax has a slight effect on inflammation of the digestive organs or the urine organ. Important Note that the flax seed can slow the absorption of medicines and some food ingredients. For example: in people with diabetes, who otherwise have reduced the ability to convert alpha-linolenic fatty acids to EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid).

Also, due to the presence of alpha-linoleic acid in flaxseed, it is not recommended for prostate and macular degeneration diseases, so in everyday use of aspirin, Andol, and cyclosporin.

Ground flax seed in a coffee mill added to various dishes, integral bread, soups, and sprinkled on fresh salads, in combination with raw oilseeds.

Buy flaxseed oil in smaller bottles, because very quickly deteriorate, about 4 to 6 months from production. The most efficient and most medicinal is freshly squeezed flaxseed oil.

When should we treat the flaxseed carefully?

In addition to proven or suspected positive effects, there is a need to mention potential hazards. Due to the possible hormonal effects, a significant amount of flax seed consumption not recommended during pregnancy and lactation, the safety of which not been verified.

Due to the phytoestrogen content of flaxseed, caution recommended in all diseases in which a change in female hormonal balance may be detrimental. These can be endometriosis, breast, uterine or ovarian tumors, polycystic ovary or while taking a contraceptive pill with low hormonal content.

Since scientific data on these diseases are incomplete and contradictory, it recommends that you seek the doctor’s opinion before starting a diet or supplement containing more than a significant amount of phytoestrogens.

How to consume flaxseeds?

The flax seed – like any food rich in fiber – is recommended to be consumed with plenty of liquid. Otherwise, it can worsen constipation. On the other hand, both flaxseed and flaxseed oil may cause diarrhea.

Due to gastrointestinal effects, it not recommended to consume diarrhea complaints, irritable bowel syndrome, ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease in the digestive tract. Similarly, patients with scleroderma should not advise using a higher amount of flax seed.

Here are some flaxseed recipes which I love prepared for my family.

Sunny Spinach Pie

There are some recipes that I feel like preparing quite immediately ;-). Immediately fell in love with it.
I found it pretty easy to prepare, even more considering how beautiful it is. I photographed the preparation, step by step so that you can make it too.

It is not only beautiful but delicious too. It can prepare in advance and will be a success among your family and friends.

Ingredients

  • for the dough:
  • 200 gr flaxseed flour
  • 100 gr spelt flour
  • 3 tbsp olive oil
  • One teaspoon Himalayan salt
  • One tbsp baking powder
  • 200 ml of sparkling water
  • for the stuffing:
  • 350 gr boiled spinach
  • 350 gr cheese or curd
  • black pepper
  • 2 or 3 cloves garlic
  • One tbsp olive oil

Instructions

  • Mix all the ingredients for the dough and work the mixture until it becomes uniform (using a mixer or not)  Cover it with plastic wrap while preparing the stuffing.

  • Divide the dough into two equal parts.  Place the 1st dough circle on baking paper. Roll each piece forming a circle of about 30cm. Distribute the stuffing as seen on the photo.

  • Cover with the second circle of dough. Wet the borders lightly using your fingers and, using a fork, attach the edges one to another. Cover the central part with a small bowl or a cup, as I did.

  • Cut the border in 3cm slices and turn each slice 90 degrees.

  • And here it is, ready to be baked! Bake for 30 minutes in the preheated oven at 180°C

Notes

Instructions for the stuffing:
Boil the spinach and squeeze it to eliminate the water.  Cut it with a sharp knife to facilitate. Fry the crushed garlic in olive oil and add the spinach. Remove spinach from the heat. Add the grated cheese or curd, salt, and pepper. 
Amalgamate all ingredients. Wait until it is cold and make the sunny pie as you can see.

It is harder to work with the flaxseed flour, but it is worth it. And it is healthy.Sunny spinach pie

Flaxseed muffins with vegetables

Ingredients

  • Six eggs
  • 3 tbsp flaxseed flour
  • One pack of mixed vegetables avoid corn
  • One teaspoon Himalayan salt
  • A half teaspoon black pepper
  • A half teaspoon turmeric
  • Two cloves garlic
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • One tbsp baking powder
  • 100 ml of sparkling mineral water

Instructions

  • Evaporate the veggies in olive oil with garlic. Wait until its cold.
  • In another bowl mix the eggs and add all the ingredients. Pour the mixture with a spoon in the muffin baking sheet and put it in a heated oven — about ten minutes at 230 degrees.

Ingredients

  • 150 gr wholemeal spelt flour
  • 100 gr wholemeal rye flour
  • 100 gr flaxseed flour
  • 130 gr greaves chopped into smaller pieces
  • 200 gr feta cheese chopped into smaller pieces and mixed with greaves
  • 100 ml of sparkling mineral water
  • One egg white
  • A teaspoon red ground paprika
  • A teaspoon ground black pepper
  • Half sachet baking powder

Instructions

  • Start by placing all the ingredients in the food mixer. Stir together than when it’s roughly combined, dump it onto the counter.
  • The mixture will be wet but resist the urge to add too much excess flour, since this will make the scones drier. 
    Lightly flour the dough, then knead it until it smooths out a bit, just a few times.
  • Roll it up, then fold it, turn it 90 degrees, and re-expand the dough. And so ten times (my number is more significant because I get stuck every time :)). At the last stretch, I have sprinkled with flaxseed and sesame-this will not be wasted.
  • Roll until the thickness of the finger. Use a 2.5″ cutter to cut circles, then place them on a silicone mat lined baking sheet. Brush the tops with the reserved egg white wash.

  • Bake at 180 degrees, for about 20 minutes.

  1. I’m so glad I came across your article as I now know a lot more about flax. I didn’t realize how far back fax goes and that it originated in central Asia. All I really knew about flax is that I love the taste of flax and enjoy cooking with it. LOL
    I have flax usually in something just about everyday. I like adding flax to my yogurt, salads, soups and baking.
    I’m always looking for new ideas and recipes to add flax to. I think your Sunny Spinach Pie looks amazing. We have a pot luck coming up at work and I think that I will make and bring your recipe!

I believe in her a bit but when I read you article I start thinking ” should I buy flax seed flower and try to bake some muffins?”And I answer to myself ” Yes” . I didn’t know much about flax seed , you gave a good explanation. Thank you
